I did something very similar...
But Windows Live Writer 2011 has gotten a little better...

     http://www.lehsys.com/2010/02/windows-live-writer-creating-a-custom-template/

And for the other guy [JLT]... you can't modify a template that's not there.

If not already, download the latest version...
     http://explore.live.com/windows-live-writer?os=other

To update Writer with your blog’s new theme:

1. Click “Start,” click “All Programs,” click “Windows Live,” and then click “Windows Live Writer.”
2. If you use Writer with more than one blog, on the Blogsmenu, select the blog that you want.
3. On the View menu, click “Edit using theme.”
4. On the View menu, click “Refresh theme.”
5. If you’re prompted to publish a temporary blog post, click “Yes.”

Have a nice day...
I hope this helps...

Until next time,
Larry Henry Jr.

I've seen a couple similar posts, but yours is very clear... thanks!

My problem is that I have not been able to set up my site styles in WLW... and when I navigate to C:UsersUser_NamAppDataRoamingWindows Live Writer I see the Dictionaries, Keywords and LinkGlossary folders, but Blogtemplates does not exist!

Seems like a catch-22... can't refresh the styles from my site, but don't have the local styles so I can't even change them. Any ideas?
