yes, but you can refuse this and they can not tie you in. I contacted Mike White mike.white@DIRECTTV.com and got out of my contract after 9 months on a 2 year deal...where they honored nothing they promised. They have terrible equipment and so they said they would fix it if we signed up for another 2 years or paid $250 for a new box. It's a known fact their equipment is just garbage!

Direct TV is just awful....they have that contract for a reason! If they had good service they wouldn't make you sign a contract. I contacted the VP (mike.white@DIRECTTV.com) of Direct TV via email after fighting the company for 9 months to get out of a contract where they lied about everything they promised, and provided terrible service. No one is there on weekends and after paying a considerable amount for the Sunday Pass it went out on really big game days numerous times...making us insane, that and the blatant bait and switch. I told Mike about how outrageous I thought his company's behavior was and he cancelled my account. I was so relieved!

Anyone here tried contesting DTV's charges via their CC provider? Seems to me that it might, at least, force DTV to produce some paperwork if they wish to collect those early cancellation fees... like... a contract that proves your consent!? Where's our government in these matters... sleeping?

I 'm now on the east coast and was going to switch from comcast 'cause of high cost for "bundled services pkg" (and continual errors in billings) to DirectTV that I've had on west coast for about 16 years that's been great. However, after hearing all the horror stories people are having with DirectTV, I think I'll now wait till Apple comes out with their rumored new tv services that will totally change the concept of how tv services are offered today. The whole cable/satellite services industry definitely needs shaken up. If Apple does as good a job there as they've done with revolutionizing the music industry it will be worth the wait!

Please let me know if there is a lawsuit against Direct tv,, Ugggh. After signing up for direct tv, I lost my job. I ended staying with them for about 2 and a half mths. After cancelling my acct, Direct tv told me that I have to pay $380 for remainder of the 2 yrs. No way was I ready for this. I have never heard of a company saying you have to pay for remainder of time with them. I had Comcast and Dish Network before and my cancellation fee was only $75. Damn shame for Direct TV. I will never sign up with them or recommend anyone to go with them.

I am in a similar situation, but more annoying. I was a happy DirecTV customer for 4 years with standard definition service. I received an ad informing me I could be getting HD for free due to my status as a longtime customer enrolled in auto billpay. I called for details and learned all I would need to do is upgrade my dish and receivers. They offered to lease me receivers, sell me receivers (significantly more expensive), and also told me I could buy a receiver outright from a 3rd party. They recommended I call in with the receiver ID and card ID to confirm the receivers were not stolen or leased receivers someone was trying to offload. For the dish replacement, I was offered a free dish upgrade as long as I continued to be enrolled in auto bill pay. No problems yet. I found two brand new in the box receivers for sale on craigslist from a former DirecTV installer who was clearing out his inventory (he had switched to installing dish network and comcast). He advised me to call DirecTV to clear the ID's before leaving with them. I dialed DirecTV, spoke with customer service and an engineering representative and cleared the receiver and card ID's for both units. I was told they were free and clear and would be mine out right (not leased and not stolen) if I bought them. Done deal.I call to switch to HD service and a few days later I'm watching my shows in HD. Sweet. Well, sweet until two bills later when I notice I have lease charges on my account for the receivers and HD package charges. WHAT?!? I called to clarify why I wasn't receiving Free HD on receivers I've confirmed I own with their own people and was told I had agreed to lease the receivers when I activated them and the HD charge is OK because it and the receiver leases are discounted. This is theft, bait and switch, lying... you name it. Another month of the overages and I called to cancel. I've requested DirecTV not bill my credit card any further and to send an invoice for any charges they feel I owe so I can review and discuss. Nope. I was charged a $370 fee for canceling and have been informed they will charge an additional $600 for my receivers. They claim when I activated my receivers it automatically placed me in a 2 year contract, hence the $370, and the receivers I bought are actually theirs. I've spent hours on the phone explaining the receiver purchase situation and asking for the phone recordings of my previous conversations or the notes on my calls but they refuse to provide them. I've asked for a record indicating I leased the receivers from them but they won't provide it. They will send me a lease agreement legal document but it's nothing I signed or asked for.The sad thing is, I was a content and happy customer until these scams initiated by DirecTV. This company will never see another penny from me, my family, or anyone I have any influence on. The dollar amount is too small to require a lawyer but the principle and audacity is enough to push me over the edge. If you are considering DirecTV for your media desires, please reconsider. They will lie, cheat, and steal to separate you from as much of your money as they can.

Being a DISH Network employee it’s unreal how many of these
horror stories about DirecTV I hear about. It makes me glad to be part of a
company that really tries to provide great customer service and use some common
sense in the tough situations. But with DirecTV it seems like you have to
really fight just to get treated like a human being. Kind of like what this guy
had to do. http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2011-10-04/business/ct-biz-1004-problem-dagosto-20111004_1_directv-customer-directv-spokesman-robert-mercer-directv-contract
He finally got some fair treatment after causing a media uproar.
